Cupping Therapy

Possible skin reactions after cupping therapy at Integrated Massage and Bodywork

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy is a form of traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. It is a type of alternative therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create a suction using negative pressure. Once the cup is applied, the muscle and skin are drawn into the cup. This loosens adhesions in the fascia and muscle, lifts fascia (connective tissue) and encourages oxygenated blood to the tissue. It also, flushes toxins and drains excess fluid by opening lymphatic pathways therefore, allowing the healing process to begin. The suction of cups quickly promotes soft tissue release by pulling it up and away from the underlying structures thus, loosening areas of tissue restriction.

Cupping Marks

Marks after cupping are NOT bruises. Bruises are caused by trauma to the tissue. However, cupping marks are caused by suction of the tissue drawing up toxins up to the surface. Mark colors can vary from light pink to deep purple or blisters. The deeper the purple mark is, the more stagnate blood is present. The light pink marks may indicate a lack of blood flow. These cupping marks may last anywhere from a few hours to about 2 weeks.
